How Many Hours of Wedding Photography Do You Need?
Most couples ask us this on the first call. It is a good question. The honest answer is simple. Most weddings need eight hours.
Here is why. Here is when you need more. Here is when you need less.

Start with the day, not the number
Hours are not the goal. A calm day is the goal. The right coverage lets the day breathe. Nobody rushes you out of a hug. Nobody checks a watch during the toasts.
So we start with your timeline. Then we count backward. Our ideal wedding timeline shows the full day.
What eight hours holds
A typical eight hour day looks like this.
Getting ready. About one hour. The light through the window. The dress on the hanger. Your mother fixing one last button.
First look and portraits. About one hour. Just the two of you first. Then your wedding party.
Family photos. About thirty minutes. We keep a list. We call names. Your aunts get back to cocktail hour fast.
Ceremony. About thirty minutes. Many Charlotte ceremonies now run fifteen to twenty minutes. We arrive early for the quiet room before guests sit.
Cocktail hour. About one hour. Candid moments with your guests. The room in full detail before anyone touches a fork.
Reception. About three hours. Entrances. First dance. Toasts. Cake. Open dancing. A short walk outside at dusk.
That adds up to about seven hours. The last hour is breathing room. Days run late. Hair takes longer. Rain moves things inside. That hour protects your peace.

The Charlotte sunset rule
This part surprises people. The season changes your timeline.
In June, the sun sets around 8:40 here. A five o'clock ceremony leaves hours of soft evening light.
In December, the sun sets around 5:15. That same ceremony ends after dark.
Fall and winter couples have two good choices. Move the ceremony earlier. Or plan a first look. A first look gives us daylight portraits before the ceremony. It also frees you to enjoy cocktail hour.
We plan this with your planner. You never have to do the math.
When eight hours is not enough
Some days need more time. Plan for ten or twelve hours in these cases.
You get ready in one place and marry in another. Travel counts as coverage time. Uptown to Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is a real drive. Every minute in the car counts.
Your celebration holds more than one ceremony. Many cultural weddings run from morning to midnight.
You want the grand exit at the very end. Sparklers last about thirty seconds. Four extra hours for thirty seconds is a lot. A staged exit earlier in the night looks the same. Your guests will still cheer.
Your guest list is large and the dance floor stays full.
Our Complete collection holds twelve hours. Two photographers stay from the first button to the last song.

When less works
Smaller days need less time. A courthouse wedding. An elopement in the mountains. A dinner for twenty people at The Duke Mansion. Four hours can hold all of it.
Do you need a second photographer?
One person cannot stand in two rooms. A second photographer gets ready with one of you. We stay with the other.
During the vows, we face you. The second photographer faces your families. You see your grandmother's face later. You see your father wipe his eyes.
Larger weddings feel fuller with two of us. Nothing is missed. Nobody is rushed.

How hours fit our collections
Every collection is finished work. It is more than a folder of files.
